Dr. Sally Wenzel is  Director of the University of Pittsburgh Asthma and Environmental Lung Health Institute, and Chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at eh University of  Pittsburgh.   She has received numerous awards from the American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society and  has a passion for improving the understanding of the prevention and treatment of asthma, in particular severe asthma.  Her human-based research has been critical to identifying the heterogeneity of asthma, as well as helping to identify novel molecular phenotypes.  Her current bench-lab interests include the role of epithelial cells in the modulation of redox balance and mucus production in the airways. She leads efforts to address the effects of the environment  on oxidative stress in airway epithelial cells of asthmatic patients.   She has authored more than 350 publications. She remains dedicated to improving the health of airway disease patients and training physician scientists.
